His comeback marks a major moment in Somalia’s tense political climate and may signal the start of his campaign to reclaim the presidency.

Since peacefully handing over power in 2022, Farmaajo has kept a low profile, staying out of public politics. Now, as the 2026 elections draw closer, he appears ready to re-enter the national stage and reconnect with his supporters.

Farmaajo, who remains popular among many Somalis for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to protect public resources, is traveling from Istanbul, Turkey, to the Somali capital. He is expected to be welcomed by political allies and supporters upon landing.

Among those accompanying him are former Water Minister Hassan Abdi Nur former Somali Ambassador to Oman and Qatar Abdirisak Ahmed Ali (Tano), Former Ambassador to Kenya Mohamed Ahmed Nur (Tarsan), and former MP Siyad Mahmoud Shire.

With Farmaajo’s expected return to Xamar, his campaign delegation shows me the type of connections that Farmaajo is bringing to revitalize his political base in Somalia ahead of the upcoming elections.

Hassan Abdi Nur was Laftagareen’s preferred candidate for the speaker post and might be the conduit between Farmaajo & LG. Tano is FY’s brother in law and deeply connected with Qatar, and Fmr mayor of Xamar Tarzan will probably be the one that helps with the outreach and rapprochement with Sheikh Sharif.
